  1. Hey Sage! You have to be the biggest blogger of all this time alright? It is going to be really fun. Mika seems pretty cool. Mia has played him for me a lot. "Mama told me what I should know, too much candy gonna rot your sole, if you love her then let her go or love's gonna get you down!" Love that song. So are you enjoying listening to him?

  2. Hi Sage!! I'm pumped that you're listening to Mika. Can't wait to hear what you think of him. He has a lot of good, bubble gum pop tunes, but he also has some more serious, even melancholy songs. I got to see Mika in concert two years ago!

  4. Okay, that was weird. Sorry.
Anyway, Mika is- okay. I think that I'm probably supossed to offer a more earth shattering revelation than that, but I like some of songs. (mostly Happy Ending), am weirded out by a lot more, and keep getting the two Mikas confused. Yes, there are two of them. And I thought that this was an uncommon name.
Actually, when I first listened I REALLY didn't like the music. Next time I blog I'll probably adore him. You never know.

  5. That is kind of the point of the stretch project I think. You start out with music thinking that it sucks, and a week in it is your favorite music! I like stretch projects.

  6. I used to listen to MIKA almost everyday and he's one of those artists that you love and basically want to inject it into your blood stream and then you get sick of it and never want to listen to it again. It may be different for you though.
He can hit some high notes can't he?!
Have you heard the song Grace Kelly? " In the chorus he starts saying how many different colors he can be and I used to think it was kind of cute and now I'm thinking "YAY I'm a Rainbow-Brite!" Not to be dissing your music or anything. He's just not my style. Glad you don't completely and Utterly hate your music (unless you actually do in which case this will be interesting)

  7. Hi Sage, I'm glad you like Happy Ending. I think that's a good one, too; definitely one of his more mellow tunes. To get more of a feel for him, watch a music video or two! He is a really dynamic performer; fun to watch. I don't think I would have necessarily loved him if I hadn't seen his videos early on. I used to be a little biased against music that was really pop-ish and upbeat, but Mika won me over.

  8. Interesting fact about Mika's life from Wikipedia: he was born with the name Michael Holbrook Penniman, and then it said that he changed his given name from Mica to Mika because people kept misprononcing it. Isn't a given name your first name? Did he change his name twice? Also his parents fled Lebanon when he was 1 (his mom was Lebanese).

  9. Hi Sage,
It's excellent that you think your music is okay - I mean, its way better than hating it, isn't it? Everyone seems to be enjoying their music more. That's really nice and spiffy and dandy and happy. It's good.
I have a little story - do you mind if I share it?
When I was little, about, like, fifteen months or something, really young (my mom told me this story) I had a friend named Michaela. I had a relative named Michael. I made the connection...Michaela, Michael. They called the relative Mike - a popular nickname, as you all know.
To tell you the truth, I couldn't really pronounce Michaela back then. I thought of Michael, and Michael, the names, and the Michael being called Mike. I decided that Michaela was going to be called "Mika" and she was called Mika. But only for a little bit. I eventually was able to pronounce Micheala. Hallelujah!
Okay. Hoped ya liked my story (know it was a titch boring, oh well)

  10. My name story kinda relates to Mika's name story, sage. I just figured that out, silly me...he he he. That really is interesting, though. Its funny that we both have a story with Michael mispronouncing

  11. Hi Sage, I suspect that they just meant that he changed the c to a k, since Mica is closer to Michael than Mika is . . . what other tunes of his are you enjoying??

  12. hey Sage. I find a couple of Mika's songs slightly obnoxious, but the one you played today I loved! I think I will start listening to Mika. Are you enjoying it, or is it starting to get obnoxious?

  13. Sage,
When I look and see what everyone is listening to I see Metallica, Rage against the machine, Coldplay, and Hip-hop. Sometimes all that music is kind of... oh can be a bit angry. Miles isn't always happy either. Maybe I'm wrong about coldplay but after I read all of those I saw Mika, the happy artist and it was quite refreshing. As you know I'm not too fond of Mika but it was funny how you've got the happy music and everyone else is listening to the music that makes them want to cry or bang their head against walls, scream, or think of leeches on toast. (sorry i came back to that reference) But Mika is happy and makes me think of cotton candy overload. How do you feel... what does Mika make you think of? (in that sentence if mika was spelled meka I could've rearranged the letters of make to spell his name but I wouldn't because that would be confusing...)

  14. that is funny: because we will do thing sometimes, and everyone will be like "hoorah!" and start dancing around and singing and acting like idiots, and being super happy and everything, and Sage will just kind of glower at us from a corner.
It is funny that all of the insane, effervescent, happy-go-lucky lunatics are listening to music that makes people curl into a ball and start sobbing, or want to jump out of a window, or lose faith in humanity, sink into a deep depression or start screaming and throwing things, while Sage (possibly the only sane member of our class) who is kind of ambivalent or dismal most of the time, is listening to happy-yellow-dance-y-pop-y-flowers-and-candy-and-joyful-frolicking-unicorn type songs.
As depressed as the rest of us are getting, with our screaming "no one will hold your hand when you die" "you've never been so used as I'm using you, abusing you..." "I'll jail and bury those committed
And smother the rest in greed
    Crawl with me into tomorrow
Or I'll drag you to your grave
    I'm deep inside your children
They'll betray you in my name" type music, I think Sage's "Momma told me what I should know-too much candy gonna rot your sole-if you love her than let her go or Love's gonna get you down!" is probably depressing her more.
    Poor Sage.

  15. Heehee! Sorry, but I had to giggle when I read Amelia's comment. It's so true. I'm sorry you aren't really liking Mika as much as I thought you would. Not exactly your style, I'll say that, but isn't that the true spirit of stretch project? Also: am I the only one here who doesn't find Mika annoying at all? I don't mean to be all disagreeable to you guys, but I don't actually think he's all that, shall we say, wafer-cookie-like. His music may be upbeat, but he definetly has some depth to him somewhere. We see this in 'Happy Ending', but there are also traces of it in "My Interpretation' and 'Any Other World'. Actually, I believe that there are traces of depth to all of his songs, but If I say that, you guys will think I'm completely insane. But let me tell you this: In the height of my Mika-obsession, I became a bit of a crazed fan and learned a bit more about Mika from, you know, watching some interviews online and, *cough cough* religiously following the fan website. but anyways, I learned that (well, this is really an opinion, not a fact, but) Mika's really interesting. As Sage said, he came here from Lebanon at the age of 1, and became interested in singing once he started going to school. He was kind of an outcast, and like many other artists found happiness through music. He doesn't play instruments, but he makes up for it with his vocal percussion, and his wide vocal range got him some jobs singing commercial jingles and things like that.
I think his unconventional-ness is reflected in his music, actually, because while it is bubblegum-poppish, it's unique, too. It couldn't be mistaken for anything else, that's for sure. I don't know if you have heard the songs "Big Girls, (You are Beautiful)" and "Billy Brown" yet, but these were the two songs that when I first got the CD I thought were really, really weird. But once I listened to the more, I sort of got their point. A lot of girls have issues with their weight, and "Big Girls" is kind of like a response to that, saying that you don't really need to be thin to be beautiful. And as for "Billy Brown", well, you should probably hear it before you talk about it, I guess.
Anyways, I hope Mika starts to grow on you. Just keep giving it a chance.
    Love,
    Mia

  16. Wow Mia! You know, I'm starting to kinda like the name Mika - I mean for a girl, not that Mika is a good name for a boy, but you know what I mean. Anyways...it's a little late to say this, but I agree with Mia and other peoples. Happy Endings was a nice song - its a smidgen sad, but its not as depressing as the song My Happy Ending by Avril Lavigne. Have you seen the music video for it? It's a little more than what would people call SCARY. First of all, it's about Mika, who's singing the song while hanging for dear life on a balloon that's floating out of his room and to the moon. And then his Ugly Dolls are singing (I mean the brand of ugly dolls) in his room. A bit creepy with the ugly dolls. I have to admit, they could've done without that. The way they made them was cool and weird. It was like a mix of cloth and clay and buttons. (Shoulda, woulda coulda) Or the whole music video. They should've done a whole different plot, no offense to Mika or anybody else who was in that ridiculous production. I'm probably over reacting a bit with the rag doll thing, but if you've read Coraline (and you should if you haven't) you know what I mean. The person who commented on the back of that cover was right: once you read this book, you'll never think of buttons the same way. Chills.
Alright, second of all, is I imagined Mika in a different way. I imagined him foreign. And I didn't exactly imagine him with a blond/dirty blond/ light brown afro (its hard to tell in the music video since it's dark) But whatever style he likes is good. Keep going, Mika!
Oh, and Sage - how are you liking Mika? Is Mika starting to grow on you? I agree with Mia - at first I thought he was really weird, but then he starts to grow on me. Mika's a talented singer. There isn't anyone I know (that's male, anyway) besides Jesse McCartney that can hit notes that high. I can't really even hit notes that are too high at all.
    Okie dokie I'm done.

  18. Just gotta say (even though probably no one will see this!) that I loooooove Mika. He is a superbly talented musician with a unique style and performance personality to the nth degree. I saw him in concert two years ago, and I was quite impressed.
